United States. United? States.

What does it mean to be an American? And is there anything united about us, the US?

I’m going to try and find out.

And in the process, I will also be trying to answer other questions: How do we identify ourselves, individually and collectively? What groups and organizations do we feel represent us, and vice versa? When we disagree, do we have to scratch each other’s eyes out in order to get our point across? What alternatives do we have? Is there room for reasonable discourse? How can we turn our differences into positive things, rather than divisive?

I kicked off the project this April 2015 with an initial road trip (below) where I went around the south and southeast asking people what they think, taking pictures, and making recordings. I hope that was the first trip of many.

I hope to continue this work in 2017, as it seems more relevant now than when I first set out.
